New ‘Sutton Hoo Hopper’ Bus Service Bridges the Gap Between Woodbridge, Melton, and National Trust Sutton Hoo

A new seasonal shuttle service, the Sutton Hoo Hopper, is set to launch for the summer holidays, providing a vital link between local transport hubs and one of the UK’s most significant archaeological sites.

The hopper will be operated in partnership with Coastal Accessible Transport Service (CATS), Woodbridge Town Council, Melton Parish Council, Suffolk County Council, and the National Trust.

The pilot service aims to make the National Trust’s Sutton Hoo more accessible to tourists and residents alike, while promoting sustainable, car-free travel within the local area.

Connecting residents and visitors to history

The Hopper will follow a timetabled pick-up schedule, connecting rail passengers, bus users and local residents more easily with Sutton Hoo.

Key stops include:

Woodbridge Train Station: Connecting Greater Anglia rail passengers to the site.

Woodbridge Turban Centre: Providing easy access for locals and visitors as a prominent meeting point. With bus connections. This will also allow for passengers to access Woodbridge after visiting Sutton Hoo.

Melton Train Station: Offering an additional pick-up point for those travelling from the north up to Lowestoft.

Sutton Hoo: Dropping passengers directly at National Trust Sutton Hoo, as well as from the Sutton Hoo Campsite to explore Melton and Woodbridge.

A Greener Way to Explore

By linking two major transport points directly to the home of the Great Ship Burial, the Sutton Hoo Hopper reduces the need for car travel, easing congestion in Woodbridge and Melton, and will mean getting to Sutton Hoo is more accessible for those in wheelchairs and with mobility issues. It will also support local schools and groups to be able to get to Sutton Hoo.

The driving force behind the initiative, Ruth Leach, who is a town councillor for Woodbridge Town Council, East Suffolk Councillor and Suffolk County Councillor said “I am incredibly excited to see this pilot journey launched. Visitors will be able to alight at Sutton Hoo without struggling to cycle or walk up the busy hill and instead of a lengthy walk from the bus stop, people who are less mobile will now have transport right to the entrance. It will benefit our local town centre economy by attracting visitors arriving by train from further afield, who will be able to access this attraction easily as part of their visit to Woodbridge. It is going to make enjoyment of this area more accessible to all, and it will not only enhance the link between both sides of the river but it will also improve access to the countryside and surrounding walks.”

Coastal Accessible Transport manager Andrew Burgess said, ‘We are really excited to be partnering with all these great organisations to supply an easy and reliable alternative to car usage to get to Sutton Hoo’

Allison Girling, Property Operations Manager at National Trust Sutton Hoo, says: “We’re delighted to be supporting the new bus service from Woodbridge and Melton, which will make Sutton Hoo even more accessible and a further link to our local community. We hope it will make it much easier for people to access Sutton Hoo without the need for a car and perhaps encourage others who do have a car to use more sustainable methods of transport.”

Cllr Carol Gradwell, Chair of Melton Parish Council, said “We welcome this sustainable and accessible initiative involving CATS and all the partners. We are particularly pleased that Sutton Hoo visitors arriving by train at Melton, will be able to get a direct bus link to their visitor centre. Currently rail travellers must walk along the main road to Sutton Hoo or use the no. 70 bus service which drops passengers at the end of the national trust site’s drive.”

The initiative is formally supported by both Woodbridge Town Council and Melton Parish Council. Cllr Nigel Phipps, Mayor of Woodbridge said  “This marks another step into the foothills of a public transport network fit for our region. It is my hope that we will all relearn the joys of using public transport. As we do so – and despite some of its current inconvenience – we will eventually win the argument for better, more frequent and more reliable public transport. Thank you to those who have made this next step possible.”

Service Details

The service is hoping to start from the summer holidays to October this year, operating Monday to Saturday between 9:30am and 17:30pm. The service has been designed to align with arrival and departure train times where possible, ensuring a smooth transition for those arriving from London, Ipswich, or Lowestoft. It is the first phase of two plans to improve rural connections via public transport.

This service is subject to funding being agreed by Suffolk County Council

About Sutton Hoo (National Trust)

Sutton Hoo, near Woodbridge, is one of the most important archaeological sites in the world and the 7th-century burial mounds, excavated from the late 1930s onwards, have revealed items including the iconic Sutton Hoo helmet that have helped shape our understanding of the origins of English history. Mrs Edith Pretty, the landowner, donated the finds to the British Museum in 1939.

The landscape has been cared for by the National Trust since 1998 and attracts over 140,000 visitors each year. Its exhibitions and displays include a full-sized, 27-meter sculpture of the ship and a 17-meter viewing tower, which gives visitors a new perspective of the burial ground.

In 2022 Sutton Hoo acquired 27 hectares of riverside grassland, which provides extended walking routes and a better visual connection between the river and the landscape.
